Private Screening of Ian Darling’s new film Polly and Me
We need to drive into the reality of women: you do matter. We have to come into the lives of women and pull them back. Give them the ability to make decisions. Let them choose. Invest them in the lives of their children and they will walk on broken glass.
–Celia Lashlie, Polly and Me panel 18 June 2010
On 18 June, 2010, Lou’s Place hosted a private screening of the new short film Polly and Me by filmmaker Ian Darling. The film tells the harrowing story of a mother and child struggling to survive in a world without the usual support systems of family and community–a story that is, sadly, not uncommon to the women of Lou’s Place.
The film was shown to a full and enthusiastic house at the Dendy Opera Quays. Following the film, three panellists joined Ian Darling to discuss the issues of child abuse and neglect and their legacy. In a conversation moderated by the ABC’s Jennifer Byrne, the panellists engaged in a stimulating discussion, bringing a wide range of perspectives to the issues raised by the film.
