Volunteer Training
Lou’s Place could not operate without volunteers. They provide a means of integrating Lou’s Place within the community and a valuable network of supporters and resources. Most importantly, volunteers help make the women at Lous Place feel special and nurtured. Some specific tasks that volunteers will be asked to do include:
- Assisting clients with the use of office facilities
- Assisting staff with client issues raised by them and to ensure their safety and well-being at all times
- Facilitating daily program activities for clients
- Managing and manning the clothing room
- Undertaking kitchen duties to provide meals for clients
- Assisting clients with the use of laundry facilities
To equip volunteers for the tasks they perform at Lou’s we offer an in-house training program. This program is conducted over an afternoon, bringing volunteers together to apprise them of the role and contribution of the volunteer, teaching techniques for dealing with difficult or unfamiliar situations and giving a small insight into the lives of the women who visit Lou’s. Volunteers will learn how to be supportive without giving advice, what boundaries are appropriate and the importance of remaining professional. Volunteers also need to be aware of policies and procedures at Lou’s, including occupational health and safety, our complaints procedure and pre and post briefings.
Testimonials regarding the volunteer training from some of our recent trainees:
-”A very positive experience bringing me closer to Lou’s, its aspirations and values.”
-”I really enjoyed meeting and swapping experiences with other volunteers.”
-”The role plays were particularly helpful. Having language is empowering. The Q&A was excellent. All my concerns were addressed.”
